In the late 1980s, Stefan Vilsmeier saw the gap between high-precision imaging and its use in surgery. Recognizing the essential role of software in surgery, he left university to start Brainlab, aiming to enhance precision, interoperability, collaboration, and efficiency. He brought in Rainer Birkenbach, now CEO, to build a digital surgical ecosystem driven by data and connectivity. What was considered a radical idea led to a foundational shift in medtech, which Brainlab continues to lead.
